Celebrating the life of

Stanley Earl Harris, Jr.

September 04, 1937 - May 04, 2024

Stanley Earl Harris, Jr.

Stanley Earl Harris, Jr passed away Saturday May 4, 2024. Born September 4.1937, he was the son of Stanley E. Harris Sr. and Bernice Wolf Harris. A third generation and lifelong Savannahian, he graduated from Savannah High School in 1954, and went to his beloved Harvard University at 16 years old. After graduating from Emory Law School, he returned to Savannah to start his legal career. He met his future wife Peggy in Atlanta and asked her to marry him on their third date. She demurred, but they wed shortly thereafter on June 27, 1964.

His career included 20 years as Assistant City Attorney for the City of Savannah under Mayor John Rousakis, various stints as a judge, and over 45 years in private practice. He loved his community, and served in various capacities with the Savannah Jaycees, the Harvard Club of Savannah, as a Shriner at the Alee Temple, and as President of the Council for World Affairs. He was active in the Democratic Party and had fond memories of meetings at Pinkie Masters.

He was a trophy-winning Rally racer before having children, loved playing golf, tennis, and basketball, playing full court at the JEA until he was 65. Even after he stopped playing tennis, he would go to the Savannah Golf Club to watch and visit with the men’s group he played with for dozens of years. He was a voracious reader and student of history, and an amateur photographer with a dark room in the house. He wrote several books, including legal tomes on construction law and a thinly veiled fictional autobiography. He also was a regular “contributor” to the editorial pages of the Savannah Morning News, Washington Post, and Atlanta-Journal Constitution.

Stan loved his children and grandchildren, and his wife, who was his best audience for his humor. He and Peggy traveled all over the world, where he would capture stunning and interesting photographs of people, places, and animals.

Stan was always interested in people, was a raconteur and jokester, often entertaining friends, colleagues and his children’s friends with his wit and curiosity.

He is survived by his wife Peggy, son Charles (Andrea), daughter Carolynne, and grandchildren Charles Jr. and Collin.

Services will be held graveside at Bonaventure Cemetery Thursday May 9, 2024, at 11am. Remembrances may be made in the form of contributions to Congregation Mickve Israel or Hospice of Savannah.
